Here we go again. The 100ml liquids rule is returning to all the EU airports, with passengers having four days to prepare. Starting from September 1, the European Union is not only bringing back the small plastic bag rule, but is also introducing new hand luggage rules which every airline will have to abide by.
So, no more confusing guidelines even experienced travellers get caught up by, with baggage dimensions and weight unique to each airline charging everyone extra. The new hand luggage rules will make the rules more straightforward, with every airline having the same requirements for size, weight and number of items.
The MOST exciting part of this is probably that every airline will need to allow one personal item on top of the carry-on bag, so no more having to hide your little handbag under that big coat or hoodie.
What is the new EU 100ml liquids rule?
As of September 1, 2024, all passengers must put all of their liquids under 100ml into one small clear bag per person, not exceeding 20cm x 20cm. So, it’s just gone back to what it was before.
The exceptions to the rule include any baby items like baby milk and food, which must be placed in a separate clear bag, as well as essential medication and special dietary items.
The rule change aims to remove any confusion, as not all airports around the EU have the advanced Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB) yet. Presently, passengers have been allowed to pass through security with liquids over 100ml where these scanners are fitted.
The EC announced: “The European Commission will temporarily enforce restrictions on liquid screening at EU airports utilising Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB). These systems, installed in certain EU airports, currently allow passengers to carry liquid containers exceeding 100 ml. However, effective from 1 September 2024, the maximum allowed size for individual liquid containers will revert to the standard 100 ml for airports operating this type of equipment.”
What are the new EU hand luggage rules?
Starting from September 1, 2024, each airline operating within the European Union has to change their hand luggage rules to fit these requirements:
- Each person is allowed one carry-on bag and one small personal item, such as a purse, backpack, or laptop bag, which must fit under the seat in front.
- Maximum weight must not exceed 10kg.
- The maximum dimensions for a carry-on bag are 55 x 40 x 20 cm including handles and wheels, and 40 x 30 x 15 cm for the personal item.
