Even though we’ve only just wrapped up a long weekend, the current spell of great weather has everyone dreaming of their next escape. For those of us who love to tactically plan holidays to get the most time off for the fewest days of leave, the end of this year is looking like a jackpot. While we were already getting excited about a similar scenario in 2027, it turns out we get a trial run much sooner than expected.
Understanding ‘Substitute’ Bank Holidays
So, what exactly is a “substitute” day? Quite simply, when a bank holiday happens to fall on a Saturday or Sunday, it is bumped to a weekday, usually the following Monday, to ensure workers don’t “lose” the day off.
According to official Government guidance: “If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday.”
Keep in mind that while these are official public holidays, your employer isn’t legally required to provide paid leave, and these dates can sometimes shift when benefit payments land in your account.
The 2026 End-of-Year Shortcut
The magic happens this December because Christmas Day (December 25) lands on a Friday. Consequently, Boxing Day falls on a Saturday. To compensate, the Boxing Day bank holiday is moved to Monday, December 28.
Just a few days later, we hit New Year’s Day on Friday, January 1. With Monday and Friday both serving as bank holidays, the final working week of 2026 is whittled down to just three days. Plus, Scotland will get Monday, January 4 off as a ‘substitute’ day for January 2nd!
The Ultimate Leave Hack: If you want to maximise this period, you can snag 10 consecutive days off by only booking three days of annual leave (December 29, 30, and 31).
