The Glasgow burger joint has won the award for the second time!
Already home to one of the best pizzerias in Europe, Glasgow’s food scene is undeniably strong (as well as delicious) and it continues to bag awards for the incredible dishes produced in the city. And now, one Glasgow establishment has added to the city’s foodie accolades once more by being crowned National Burger of the Year for 2021.
The legendary West End food spot El Perro Negro successfully scooped up first place at the National Burger Awards 2021, with its classic Top Dog burger. The burger joint also managed to come first for the second time in three years – the first ever nominee to win the title twice, following its initial success back in 2019.
The team took to Instagram last night to announce the win, commenting: “Oops we did it again! National Burger of the Year Award winners 2019 AND 2021! First ever to win it twice. Wow!” Cooked up by Nick Watkins, who founded El Perro Negro, the Top Dog Burger saw off competition from 14 other burgers in the UK, all of which were cooked, served, tasted and judged at the live final in London.
If you aren’t familiar with the Top Dog burger and are yet to try it, you are missing out BIG time. The Top Dog Burger’s beef patty is topped with bone marrow, Roquefort butter, double bacon, caramelised onions and black truffle mayo and served in a soft brioche bun.
The burger is a firm favourite on the El Perro Negro venues in Finnieston and on Woodlands Road, and if you weren’t convinced about this drool-worthy burger before this latest accolade might just be enough to change your mind.
The luscious bone marrow butter from the best burger in the UK also features in their Black Dog burger with burger cheese; Lawson black pudding; caramelised onion; pickles; and burger sauce; as well as their NYC burger with pastrami. It may sound unusual but don’t knock it til you’ve tried it! The restaurant also serves up epic sides such as crispy fried confit wings in either buffalo or gochujang sauce or fries topped with togarashi or buffalo sauce and blue cheese.
