David Ian for Crossroads Live has announced a new production of the “most fantasmagorical” musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is coming to Glasgow Kings Theatre between August 27 and September 8, 2024. The musical opened at Mayflower Theatre, Southampton on April 30, 2024, ahead of a UK tour visiting 20 cities across the country.
The production is based on Ian Fleming’s iconic children’s tale and was later made into the 1968 film. And, of course, spectators can expect to hear the beloved songs by the Sherman Brothers including Toot Sweets, Hushabye Mountain, Truly Scrumptious and the Academy Award-nominated main banger, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
The story explores the absent-minded inventor Caractacus Potts who restores an old racing car assisted by his children Jemima and Jeremy. After the family finds out the car has magical powers, they embark on a light-hearted fantastical adventure to worlds far-far away.
Directed by Thom Southerland (Titanic, Parade), the production will bring together a world-class team of experienced creators: the choreography is perfected by Karen Bruce (BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, The Bodyguard), with Set and Costume design put together by Morgan Large (Newsies, Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat).
Orchestrations and Musical Supervision are mastered by George Dyer (The Wizard of Oz, Annie, Billy Elliot) and the art of the right casting is done by Debbie O’Brien. The music and lyrics is composed by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, and was adapted for the stage by Jeremy Sams.
The tickets go on sale from June 8, and you can get them on the musical’s website.
