Armed Forces Day is upon us, and First Bus is launching a UK-wide initiative to celebrate. On Sunday, November 9 and Tuesday, November 11, all serving Armed Forces members, veterans and cadets can travel for free on the operator’s buses, including in Glasgow.
As First Bus has a long affiliation with the Armed Forces community and a long history of colleagues who served, the news comes as no surprise.
Any person travelling to an organised event wearing uniforms of the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Marines, Royal Air Force and any associated cadet force can hitch a free ride across all of its UK bus networks.
Furthermore, free travel is allowed if a person owns a current Ministry of Defence-issued card with their branch of military service indicated, or is wearing their uniform or medals. Plus, any First Bus drivers who have previously served in the forces are also encouraged to wear their associated military attire.
What is more, if safe to do so, First Bus drivers will be allowed to pull over at 11am on both days to observe the two minutes’ silence.
A spokesperson for First Bus said: “We have many colleagues who have served in the military or have friends and family connections, so this is always a poignant time of the year.
“We hope free travel on our services will make it as easy as possible for as many veterans, serving personnel and cadets to attend Remembrance services and events in their region.
“The patience of customers in helping our drivers to pay their respects is much appreciated.”
