There is just something otherworldly about Glasgow Central Station – like an (always freezing) portal to another dimension. While the station does not actually transport anyone to other dimensions (or DOES it?), the spot is consistently buzzing with locals and visitors alike. As a result, Glasgow Central was named one of the busiest train stations in the UK.
The Office of Rail and Road surveyed train stations across the UK, determining which ones are the most and least used. Liverpool Street Station is officially the busiest train station in the UK, boasting a whopping 100 million entries and exits. However, Elton and Orston in Nottinghamshire was named the least used station, with only 68 entries and exits.

Outside of the UK, Birmingham New Street took the top spot with 36.6 million entries and exits, while Manchester Piccadilly was second on the list (27.4 million). Leeds took the third spot, almost at a tie with Manchester at 27.3 million entries and exits.
While Glasgow Central isn’t as busy as Central London stations, it is the fourth busiest train station in the UK, and the busiest in Scotland. Last year, the station ranked third on the list, going down one this year, with 25.3 million entries and exits.

Feras Alshaker, director of planning and performance at the Office of Rail and Road, said: “This year’s statistics show rail usage continuing to grow around the country, and we’re also seeing the sustained impact of major investment, particularly the Elizabeth line. These insights are vital in understanding how travel patterns are changing and in planning a network that meets passenger needs.”
