Have you ever walked out of a dinner spot thinking, “That was easily the best meal I’ve had in months”? We recently uncovered a real gem in the very heart of Glasgow that delivers exactly that feeling, leaving you craving more and planning your next visit before you know it.
Located in Merchant City’s Royal Exchange Square, Glaschu (which is pronounced Glas-a-hoo) is a central Glasgow staple for refined Scottish dining. Appropriately, the name translates to “dear green place” in Scottish Gaelic, the historical root of the city’s name.
So, let’s dive into what truly matters: the food. Recently, Glaschu has entered a new era, with Conner Magee appointed as the Head Chef. Chef Conner Magee has worked in the UK’s most respected kitchens, including Michelin-starred Aquavit London under Henrik Ritzén, Inver with Pam Brunton and Nottingham’s Alchemilla.

What is more, the team at Secret Glasgow recently had the pleasure of tasting the new menu firsthand, and we were absolutely delighted. You typically expect a fine dining establishment to serve good food with a premium price tag to match. What sets Glaschu apart, however, is its completely unpretentious hospitality, its welcoming ambience, and a culinary lineup that genuinely earns its right to a spot in the Michelin Guide, in my honest opinion.
Overlooking Royal Exchange Square, the restaurant’s boutique size gives it the exclusive air of a private members’ club. The soft, light-toned furnishings create an inviting, homely aesthetic, which is beautifully grounded by the vibrant columns framing the dining room.

The menu is deliberately concise but thoughtfully curated to satisfy most palates, featuring a focused selection of starters, main courses and desserts, including highlights like Buckfast Oysters, Barra’s Doughnuts and a range of seasonal Scottish dishes. While it might not be the ideal destination for vegans, there is a dedicated vegetarian main course, alongside an abundance of gluten-free dishes for gluten-sensitive diners.
To kick off the meal, the Venison Tartare with Blackberry, puffed potato, and sourdough was a delightful start.
For the main course, the Sharing Beef Wellington hit the absolute sweet spot, stealing the show. Accompanied by horseradish, carrots and red wine jus, it was pure comfort on a plate. We, of course, had to have some mashed potatoes on the side! It might not fix my physical aches and pains, but the sheer bliss of a spectacular meal is a pretty excellent temporary remedy.

When it comes to the final course, the desserts are certainly a masterclass in beautiful presentation, and we tried the White Chocolate cremeux, Pistachio truffle and Raspberry sorbet, which is a true delight to treat oneself with – though it is the savoury menu that will truly inspire your return.
Frankly, we are a bit mystified as to why Glaschu hasn’t racked up a massive collection of trophies just yet, but we are absolutely certain this venue is on the path to major acclaim, so people at the Michelin Guide, I hope you’re reading this! You can book your table here.
