Most of us have been caught out with the super-early Glasgow Subway closing time on Sundays, at least I know I have. More than once… But what if I told you that the Glasgow Subway opening times are officially extending?
As part of the complete modernisation programme of the Glasgow Subway, SPT’s partnership has now approved the proposed new opening hours. As a result, passengers will officially be able to enjoy extended operating hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and, most importantly, Sundays.
The complete modernisation programme will boast platform screen doors (PSDs) installed at all stations, as well as Unattended Train Operation (UTO), which will mean that Subway service hours can be stretched beyond the current schedule.
The new proposed Glasgow Subway opening hours

Monday – Thursday
06:30 – 23:30 – No change
Friday – Saturday
06:30 – 00:30 – Approximately 1 hour later than the current closing time.
Sunday
06:30 – 23:30 – Approximately 3.5 hours earlier opening and 5.5 hours later closing than the current schedule.
The new schedule will be revised every two years once operational, and has been well-received by everyone involved.
Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Stuart Patrick said: “We are very encouraged to see SPT’s proposed new operating hours for the Subway once the current modernisation programme is complete. This will see increased services over the weekend, making it easier for people to travel into Glasgow.
“These additional services, alongside the introduction of contactless payments, is welcome progress in helping to modernise the network and improve accessibility for workers, residents and visitors alike.”
Director of CPT Scotland Paul White, said: “From an integration point of view, any extension to Subway operating hours is to be welcomed. The Subway is an important part of the region’s transport infrastructure, and additional hours of operation will help more passengers link sustainable travel modes like bus and the subway, making it easier to travel to and around the city, whether for work or leisure.”
