If you’re looking to feed that competitive spirit in a more unusual way, this one is for you. A tree-hugging competition is coming to Glasgow, where all you have to do, well, is just hug trees, and mean it. And yes, I have the same questions as you.
The Glasgow Tree Hugging Tournament is the first-ever of its kind, taking place at Dams to Darnley Country Park on October 6. Between 2pm and 4pm, nature lovers will be hugging trees, competing for the top spot at the tournament. The family-friendly event is welcoming people aged four and up to show their appreciation for nature and just have a wholesome day out with their loved ones. However, dogs are not allowed on this occasion.
What are the tournament categories and how can you win?
The Glasgow Tree Hugging Tournament has three categories: Speed Hugging, Dedication and Freestyle. Each category will last one minute, and everyone is invited to participate in all of them.
The Speed Hugging category is just what it says on the tin: you have to hug as many trees as you can in one minute, with each hug lasting at least five seconds.
The Dedication category is slightly different, where nature lovers will choose one tree to show love to. The more devotion and passion you show the tree, the better.
The Freestyle category encourages tree huggers to go wild – the more inventive the hugs, the better. Get creative!
Do I have to participate or can I just watch?
Spectators are also encouraged, and tree-hugging is not required to have a good time. There are watch-only tickets available for those who don’t wish to compete.
What if I win?
The winner of the Glasgow Tree Hugging Tournament will be able to enter the 2025 World Championships in Finland, as the organisers have partnered with The World Tree Hugging Association, in the HaliPuu forest in Levi, Finland.
Tickets are pay-what-you-can donations, available for people aged 4+. You can book them here.
