It is safe to say we have had it pretty mild this autumn, with (most) our winter coats still packed away in our closets (until now). However, it looks like winter has officially arrived – The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice starting from today.
Looks like the big coats are making a belated appearance after all. Starting from Monday, November 18, Glasgow has seen its temperatures drop below zero during the night. As a result, The Met Office issued another Yellow Weather Warning for Snow & Ice, cautioning Glaswegians of potential disruption from today (November 21).
The Met Office said: “Wintry showers are expected to gradually move south this afternoon, then feeding inland from Irish Sea and North Sea coasts at times this evening and overnight, especially through the Cheshire Gap to affect parts of the Midlands and north Wales. Where these occur 2-5cm of fresh snow is possible, with this most likely on ground above 100m.
Icy stretches are expected to form on untreated surfaces during Thursday evening and overnight into Friday morning as temperatures drop below freezing, especially following any showers.”
The exact times of the Yellow Weather Warning in Glasgow
The warning is in place between 12pm on November 21 and 10am on November 22. Locals and visitors alike are warned of potential power cuts, “untreated pavements and cycle paths become impassable”, rural communities becoming inaccessible, train and bus delays and/or cancellations and general travel delays while on the road.
After the weather warning is over, the rest of the week will see lower temperatures, with Friday, November 22 seeing highs of 4 degrees and lows of 0, while Saturday, November 23 will be warmer with highs of 6 and lows of 5.
In its weekend forecast between November 23 and 25, The Met Office said: “Strong winds with rain and snow spreading north on Saturday. Remaining windy but milder and rain rain clearing on Sunday. Rain or showers and a risk of gales on Monday.”
