As far as I’m concerned, Greggs is up there with the legendary likes of scones, scotch eggs and sausage and mash when it comes to grub that’s synonymous with Great Britain. The beloved bakery chain has been filling our rumbling tummies for around 75 years now. But for the first time in almost two decades, Greggs is going international.
It was announced this week that Greggs will soon be serving up its great-value goodies in the Canary Islands. The brand’s first international outpost since 2008 will land in the international departures area of Tenerife South Airport, providing passengers with the ultimate pre-flight fuel.
Tenerife is the largest and most popular of the Canary Islands, welcoming around 13 million travellers each year (around 50% of whom are from the UK). Having recently nabbed the title of Britain’s biggest bakery chain, Greggs is set to open inside the Spanish airport in the coming weeks. And I’m sure its arrival will be welcome with open arms mouths.
The menu is expected to feature all the firm favourites, including sandwiches, sweet treats, and, of course, sausage rolls. The new Spanish menu is also set to include a new Spanish omelette roll and freshly squeezed orange juice. The new store will boast seating for up to 92 customers, allowing plenty of travellers to scoff their sausage rolls in style.
Róisín Currie, the chief executive of Greggs, said: “Tenerife South Airport is a hub for millions of UK and international passengers each year, making it the ideal location to test spreading our wings in an overseas setting.
“It’s an exciting milestone for Greggs as we bring a slice of home to the Canaries, and we’re confident our great-value offering will resonate just as well under the Spanish sun as it does on the UK high street.”
