According to religious institutions, halal food is the way an animal is killed for meat. To be classed as Halal, the animal must be killed by cutting its throat and without being pre-stunned, letting all the blood drain. So, while Ramadan is almost upon us, we have gathered a list of restaurants in Glasgow that serve halal meat for you to break your fast.
1. Turkiye Efes Restaurant
97/99 Candleriggs, Merchant City, G1 1NP
Starting of the list with Turkish restaurant Turkiye Efes Restaurant, serving traditional Turkish dishes that have been described how one’s mum would make. Authentic cuisine is not the only aspect that the restaurant is proud for: it is a place where families and friends can get together and has become a part of the community since opening this year. Guests can expect hot and cold starters, mixed grill, traditional Turkish pides and house specials.
2. Madras Cafe
82 Howard Street, G1 4EE
Madras Cafe is a South Indian restaurant prepared to do things the proper way instead of cutting corners. Because of this, they have been nominated for the ‘Best Restaurant in Scotland‘ award at the British Curry Awards, and is at the top of the list of TripAdvisor’s best halal restaurants category. Expect to find a wholesome menu of all-time favourites such as curries and homemade naan bread, as well as Indian Tandoor, grilled meat and street food options.
3. Saffron By Paradise
411-413 Great Western Road, G4 9JA
Formerly known as Paradise for over a decade, Saffron by Paradise has recently been rebranded with a fresh look and name. The restaurant is still serving authentic Persian cuisine with their charcoal grilled kebabs, spices, salads and all the dips made from Scottish produce. Guests can expect plenty of small plates to share amongst friends and family, as well as traditional stews, kebabs, or a feast of mixed shawarma. One thing is clear – one can never go wrong with shawarma.
4. Ashoka Ashton Lane
19 Ashton Lane, G12 8SJ
Located on beloved Ashton Lane in Glasgow’s West End, Ashoka Ashton Lane offers authentic Indian cuisine that offers a modest but quality menu. Locals have also deemed the spot “West End’s best end”, and we’re now obsessed with this term!

Another Indian jewel on the list, Charcoals is a local family business aiming to treat their customers as family. Having won an award for The Best Indian Restaurant at The Food Awards Scotland in 2015, the restaurant has continued to serve delicious food with constant raving reviews. On top of a wide selection of curries, Charcoals offers a generous menu ranging from Tandoor grills to Biryanis and even Belgian waffles.
