When we think of going for a treatment, massages, facials and other regular spa and beauty salon services come to mind. However, there is one wonderfully unique place in Glasgow that offers treatments largely based on science, like Scotland has never seen before. Holon has recently opened its doors providing private ice bath and infrared sauna sessions, red light therapy, HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy), VR and more.
Located on Great Western Road, Holon is Glasgow’s newest health and wellbeing centre offering both one-off treatments, sessions, classes and consultations as well as packages and memberships with better value for money. Founded by 33-year-old Glaswegian Josh, who also graduated from Oxford and Harvard, the spot has opened up an unparalleled healing space for functional medicine and innovative treatments within the city.
Holon is so high-tech, that even its air is completely clean, the walls are painted with nontoxic paint and the lighting system was designed by NASA to work with the body’s natural circadian rhythm.
With its range of treatments and services, the centre aims not only to help diagnose and treat those with chronic conditions, but also to encourage optimal health and prevention. The range of treatments include a private infrared sauna and ice bath space downstairs, as well as red light therapy, HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy), PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy), Compression Boots, Vielight Brain Photobiomodulation Therapy (which literally shines red light wavelengths directly into the brain) and Virtual Reality to help boost mental health.
What is more, there is a tranquil room upstairs for yoga classes, where guests can disconnect from their everyday struggles by giving their minds a break with breathwork and movement.
Secret Glasgow got the chance to try most of the treatments at Holon, and both of us were impressed. On top of both of our skin looking (and feeling) fantastic the next day with the help of the infrared sauna and red light therapy, the muscle pain in my legs from a previous workout almost completely disappeared after using the compression boots. And all of that just after one visit!
The amount of intense relaxation we have experienced just after a few hours is noteworthy on its own, not to mention the health benefits behind each technology.
Secret Glasgow also got the chance to have a chat with Joshua Fields, founder of Holon, delving deeper into the science behind it all.
What aspect of Holon are you most passionate about? Which piece of equipment has the most innovative science behind it?
“I’m most passionate about supporting people with chronic complex conditions that standard medicine has no answers for. Conditions like ME, fibromyalgia and long-covid are ubiquitous, and the latest insights in neuroscience suggest these diagnoses are treatable. These insights are from a field of neuroscience known as predictive processing – which suggests in these conditions, the brain becomes overly sensitised to threats and creates a maladaptive illness response as part of a ‘prediction error.’ The implications are huge for medicine.
How do you support your clients outside of the high-tech treatments and what are the educational resources?
“We’re one of the first clinics in the UK to offer in-depth diagnostics for environmental toxin load – things like mycotoxins from mould, heavy metals, and chemicals found in our environment. These toxins often put pressure on the immune system and nervous system, and many of them have also been found to be hormone disruptors, too.
We also partner with one of America’s leading functional medicine clinics to deliver consultations for people looking to get to the root of ongoing health issues.”
