Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again again. It appears a third instalment to the hit musical comedy might be on its way, as creator Judy Craymer says she “knows there’s a trilogy there.” So ABBA fans rejoice as we hope to take another trip to the Greek islands soon.
23 years ago, Mamma Mia! debuted on the West End. Based on the songs of ABBA, the story followed a young bride who invites three men to her wedding to figure out which is her real father. But really, Mamma Mia! is all about the music. Featuring such hits as Super Trouper, Lay All Your Love on Me, Dancing Queen and Voulez-Vous, to name but a few.
Its roaring success led to a film adaptation in 2008, starring Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, and Julie Walters. Only further cementing its status as a modern classic. With a sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, arriving a decade later in 2018. (Which if you ask fans is even better than the first!)
Knowing Me, Knowing You, we’ve all been waiting for a third film ever since. It appears the creators behind the smash hit series will Take a Chance on… a third instalment. The playwright behind both the stage musical and movies, Judy Craymer was speaking to Deadline ahead of ITV’s new talent show, Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream.
“It’s in its earliest stages,” she said and even hinted at the return of a fan-favourite character. “There is a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back —— and if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna.”
This, of course, is nothing official. Plus, seeing as the sequel was 10 years in the making, we might have to wait for at least another five years to return to the Greek island of Kalokairi. “I don’t want to over-egg it, but I know there’s a trilogy there,” added Judy. Let’s just hope this new project is a labour of love and not all about Money, Money, Money.
