Taking over part of the historic Jacobean Building in Merchant City, The Corset Club will be Scotland’s first ever LGBTQ+ cocktail lounge and show bar. Rather fittingly, the building used to be a corset wholesalers that would provide luxury shapewear to stores across the UK. Locals may even recognise the ‘Jacobean Corsetry’ sign that has been there since the 1940s.
Promoting a safe and inclusive space for queer people and allies, The Corset Club is the brainchild of MD Callum Raymond Young, who boasts over a decade of hospitality experience in the city. He says:
“Opening my own venue has been a long held dream and The Corset Club will be an inclusive space for all people to come together and celebrate creativity and culture. We are committed to fostering a sense of community, celebrating diversity, and contributing to Glasgow’s nightlife. I am incredibly proud to lead this initiative and look.”
Doors will open on Thursday, March 28 and will stay open seven days a week; jam-packed with cabaret, drag and comedy performances. Outfits will no doubt be a nod to the origins of the building, with performers donning corsetry amongst other elaborate looks. And you can expect the interiors to be lavish and sexy, with velvet curtains and candlelight to match the vibe.
Of course, the bar will remain well-stocked and tended by experts. Not only that, but the cocktail menu has been inspired by iconic films and queer culture, with drinks like Call Me By Your Name and Paris is Burning to tickle your fancy. There will also be pizza available until late, should you need help soaking them up.
The Corset Club is for people of all identities and backgrounds, and stands against prejudice. It’s committed to being accessible and inclusive: meaning large format menus, light sensitivity glasses, ear defenders, and accessible toilets are all available if needed. The aim is solely to build a people-friendly space where everyone can come together and celebrate culture.
The first 50 guests to arrive from 4pm on March 28 will receive a generous goodie bag with gifts from the likes of Nonna Said Pizza and Tom Ford Beauty.
