TikTok sensation and TV chef, Jimmy Lee, has expanded his Cantonese food business with a brand new sister restaurant in Larkhall. Shanghai Oriental offers authentic Chinese food straight from Shanghai with an extensive menu created in collaboration with Chef himself.
Chef Jimmy Lee started his career working in his dad’s takeaway at the age of 16 and has built his business after gaining some invaluable experience. On top of the successful Salt & Chilli restaurants, with the newest one having opened in Glasgow’s Southside in 2022, Chef Lee also owns and is the head chef of the leading Cantonese Glasgow restaurant Lychee Oriental. The award-winning Chef also boasts a colourful career in TV, appearing on the BBC’s Great British Menu, Channel 4’s My Kitchen Rules and regularly presenting cookery segments on popular ITV programmes such as This Morning show.
Shanghai Oriental is a sister restaurant to Shanghai Teahouse in Bothwell, which opened in 2019. And now, Shanghai Oriental aims to deliver a fresh modern take on traditional Asian food. Taking over the former Royal Bank of Scotland building on Union Street in Larkhall, the restaurant seats 65 diners and offers private dining and options for takeaway. After the refurbishment, the atmosphere and decor of the restaurant mirror the design of the best restaurants in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
Guests can indulge in culinary creations such as Chicken Satay, Scallops with Ginger and Spring Onions, and Roast Duck in Plum Sauce. Plus, Shanghai Oriental offers a gluten-free menu for the gluten-sensitive souls out there like me.
Chef Jimmy Lee commented: “I’ve been a chef for over 20 years, and it’s been an honour to mentor the Shanghai Oriental kitchen team as they open their doors in Larkhall. The restaurant’s cuisine features Chinese and Southeast Asian meals, with organic products used whenever possible. In addition, the crew here strives to combine the best in hygiene, food sourcing, culinary skills, and service.”
