The childhood staple of many Millennials and Gen Z’s, ‘Shrek’ has been a core memory for many of us growing up. The fourth movie behind the franchise came out in 2010 with ‘Shrek Forever After’, yet there seems to be a fifth film in the works, after all. ‘Shrek 5’ has been confirmed by Dreamworks Animation for July, 2026, boasting an all-star original cast.
To the delight of most audiences, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all set to make a welcome reunion at the swamp as the original cast. However, Antonio Banderas has not yet been confirmed as Puss in Boots.
‘Shrek 5’ is directed by Walt Dohrn this time around, who voiced Rumpelstiltskin in ‘Shrek Forever After’, as well as being the writer and artist in ‘Shrek 2’ and ‘Shrek The Third’ and the head of story on ‘Shrek Forever After’.
The ‘Shrek’ franchise won over the world with its four movies, with ‘Shrek 2’ being the most successful grossing £725 million.
Eddie Murphy told Variety there could also be a Donkey spinoff film in the plans: “We started doing [‘Shrek 5’] months ago,” Murphy told Collider. “I did this. I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. ‘Shrek’ is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a ‘Shrek,’ and we’re doing a Donkey.”
Producer Chris Meledandri has also commented on the current challenges saying: “The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”
So, we cannot wait to jump back into the nostalgic land of Far Far Away in 2026, even though it seems like two years is far, far away in itself right now. But the important part is that ‘Shrek 5’ is confirmed, and that’s it’s actually happening.
