As the people of the Victorian era were obsessed with digging tunnels, our River Clyde did not escape, either. The Harbour Tunnels were created to allow for safe passage under the river, accompanied by two rotundas. Now, as the tunnel has been abandoned for many years, the rotundas have a different role.
The North Rotunda under the crane was a restaurant before, but that has since closed. And now, it is officially being turned into The Rotunda and Roundhouse, being called “the future of entertainment”.
As renovation and restoration works are already under way, the space is being transformed into a cocktail bar, a live music venue and an impressive, versatile central space with a dome, as well as an outdoor terrace.
The Rotunda and Roundhouse is set to showcase original features while creating a modern venue with cutting-edge technology and fittings.
Andy Roger, Managing Director of The Rotunda and Roundhouse, said: “It’s incredibly exciting to be part of this project to create a stunning new venue for Glasgow, in a truly iconic building.
“Bringing the Rotunda back to life with the plans Forrest have, having the chance to build a team from this early stage to breathe new life into this beautiful structure, were factors that attracted me to this role.
“The works are ongoing but very much on course – we will open in May 2027 as a multi-venue destination for everything from live music and comedy to weddings, events, conferences, awards ceremonies and everything in between.”
“This is not a refurb and it’s not a new building on an old site – it is about carefully restoring an important piece of Glasgow’s history.
“Glasgow has always been built on the spine of the Clyde and surrounding area and the Rotunda has been at the heart of that for almost 150 years.
“Now it is surrounded by the SEC, The Hydro and Radisson RED, creating a whole new entertainment destination for the city and beyond.
“We are introducing a fresh, relevant venue for people to enjoy now, preserving the history, character and fibre of the building but bringing it to life with modern experiences and hospitality.”
When will The Rotunda and Roundhouse open?
The Rotunda and Roundhouse is set to open its doors in May, 2027.
Keith Vallance from Forrest – who has overseen the intensive programme of design and works – said: “We are creating the city’s most exciting new social, entertainment and events destination.
“The next stage is the right people executing that vision and bringing it to life, building a programme by working with their existing connections.
“We have brought in Andy to steer the project and ensure this beautiful building is given the second life it deserves as a venue for modern Glasgow. We are excited to see him bring our vision to life along with his own ideas.
“From live shows, dining and drinks to a stunning wedding, conference and awards venue or simply somewhere to relax and socialise, we are delivering a modern Rotunda which is centred around you.”
