Live music, a relaxing ambience and lots and lots of candles are a given at Candlelight concerts in Glasgow. But that doesn’t mean attendees don’t have a few pending questions before they go. What to wear? What’s on the set list? Can you take pictures? We get it — you want to enjoy the experience to the max, so we’ve come up with five helpful things to know before you go to one of these enchanting concerts in the city.
1. Plan your journey
Glasgow’s traffic can get pretty hectic, especially during rush hour. That’s why planning your journey to the venue ahead of time is so important. Seats are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis in each zone and late entry isn’t permitted, so ensuring you arrive with more than enough time to spare is key. Doors also open around 45 minutes prior to the concert start time, giving you ample time to sit back and relax under the candlelight glow before the show begins.
2. What to expect when you arrive
As soon as you get to the venue, you’ll show your ticket to a member of the Candlelight staff who’ll guide you to your seating section. Once you’re in your seat, you’ll get the chance to take in the beauty of the venue. From The Merchants House to The Corinthian Club, Candlelight venues in Glasgow have been specially chosen for their history, architecture or both, so we recommend arriving early if only just to soak in the atmosphere created inside these magnificent candlelit spaces.
3. The set list
There’s a tentative set list for the evening, so while the the programme may change, you can still expect the biggest hits or most famous works from the artist being paid tribute to. And to keep audiences on their toes, there may even be a fan favourite or lesser-known song added to the set list on the night.
4. Can you take photos?
So, the big question, can you take photos? Before the performance begins, you’ll be asked to refrain from taking pictures during the show. However, before the concert comes to an end, the musicians will invite you to take out your phones so you can get a good snap or video of the last few songs. These musical performances illuminated by thousands of candles make for a great Instagram photo op, but just remember — no flash!
5. Dress code
Dressing up in all your finery often goes hand in hand with attending a classical music concert. But that’s really not the case with Candlelight. There’s no dress code, meaning you can rock whatever feels most comfortable for you. But if you’d like a little guidance, you can’t go wrong with smart casual.
