The thrill of exploring a new place, strolling down the streets filled with stories untold, with colourful buildings reflecting the sunlight, brightening a gloomy day. Culross is far more than just another pretty village – it is highly beloved by film and TV crews for its stunning vistas, most notably appearing in the hit TV series ‘Outlander’ starring Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan.
Located in Fife, just 45 minutes from Glasgow, Culross (pronounced ‘Coo-russ’) is a Scottish gem steeped in heritage and beautiful architecture. It holds significant ties to Glasgow as the birthplace of the city’s very own patron saint, St Mungo, and it comfortably earns its spot on Secret Glasgow’s list of Scotland’s prettiest villages.
Culross in ‘Outlander’
For those tracking down ‘Outlander’ filming locations, Culross famously stood in as Cranesmuir, served as a Jacobite rebellion encampment, and doubled as Laoghaire’s residence in Season 4, making appearances across Seasons 1, 2, 4, 7 and 8. A great itinerary starts at the Mercat Cross before heading to Tanhouse Brae, the walkway lined with colourful houses that lead down to Cranesmuir in Season 1.

Fans will also recognise The Study Building from Season 1 as Geillis Duncan’s house. While the structure is actually white in reality, the production crew painted the buildings black during filming to accurately reflect the gloomy atmosphere of the 18th-century Highlands. Meanwhile, the Wee Causeway served as the path to Mrs Baxter’s house in Season 1, as well as Laoghaire’s home in Season 4.
Visitors should definitely explore Culross Palace, a distinct yellow building featured throughout Seasons 1, 2, and 4 that is well worth a wee visit, regardless of its TV fame. To wrap up the tour, head over to The West Kirk, which viewers will recognise as the Black Kirk and Saint Nicholas’ Kirkyard.

Once again, Culross returned to the screen once again in the emotional season 8 finale alongside other iconic Season 1 locations like Midhope Castle (Lallybroch) and Falkland (1940s Inverness). In the show’s universe, the historic streets of Culross famously doubled as Cranesmuir, the village where Claire first met Geillis Duncan and faced the witch trials all those years ago. Its inclusion in the final episode was a massive, emotional nod to the show’s roots for long-time fans.
Beyond its TV connections, Culross offers plenty of other sights to fill a day out. You can explore the historic Culross Abbey and its monastery ruins, or take a scenic walk by Culross Beach and the pier. If you do visit the pier, however, please heed the local advice and do not step onto it, as the structure is currently deteriorating and unsafe for use.
