The question is – caramel wafer or tea cake? Well, we could get a lot more of both, as Tunnock’s has submitted a planning application to expand their existing warehouse in Uddingston, Lanarkshire.
The warehouse is a tourist destination in and of itself, with the brand being one of the most prominent names in Scotland.
The planning permission suggests the building be expanded upwards, adding a new floor with new walls and a roof. The new space will serve as a packaging store, which should help speed up production, as well as open more space for reserves as demand soars. What is more, the project is entirely self-funded by Tunnock’s, which is a testament to the success of the business.

The Tunnock’s factory has been around in Uddingston since 1960, while the business was founded in 1890.
What did the planning application for the expansion of Tunnock’s say?
The planning application said: “This proposal will provide Tunnock’s with a secure packaging store. It will provide supply resilience and future-proof the present factory to accommodate the anticipated increased worldwide demand for Tunnock’s products.”
“The Tunnock’s Bakery’s presence within Uddingston, along with the well-established shop, helps to safeguard the established town centre. The factory and shop are themselves something of a tourist attraction, and resistant to the changing patterns of shopping.”
“The project will be entirely self-funded by the existing successful business. “The materials are proposed to be as light and airy as possible, while avoiding the glare which might be associated with metallic or brilliant white finishes, and to reflect the red in Tunnock’s house colours.”

“It is a functional and unpretentious, but high-quality, finish, reflecting the present industrial character of the site. There are currently a total of 534 staff members across all roles, employed in the factory, mostly living locally.”
“The proposal does not increase the working areas within the factory and will have no effect on staff numbers, though it will help secure the existing jobs through more efficiency in handling and great availability of packaging.”
The planning application for the expansion of the Tunnock’s bakery is currently under review by Glasgow City Council, and is awaiting final approval.
