That’s right, there are wild wallabies in Scotland, living on a small island in Loch Lomond. As a true hidden gem, the island can only be accessed by a private boat, kayak, or paddleboard, and Wallaby Island is now officially up for sale.
Inchconnachan Island, known as the Wallaby Island by the locals, spans 103 acres within the freshwaters of Loch Lomond, just under an hour from Glasgow.

Owned by Scottish radio and TV presenter Kirsty Young, the island is currently on the market for £3 million with the planning permission for a luxury home included. What is more, those not wanting to bother with the building process have the option to purchase the island for £10 million, with the luxury lodge building included.
Plans to build a holiday lodge on Inchconnachan Island were approved at the start of 2025, and are seen as quite controversial by wildlife charities and the public. In 2022, the plan received over 100,000 signatures to halt the planning permissions, but the effort proved unsuccessful.
However, a spokesperson for the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority advised that the planning permission “will have no implications for the wallabies on the island.”

The new holiday home will be built on screw-piled foundations “to preserve the island’s precious ecology”, boasting a jetty and a boathouse. It is important to note that Inchconnachan is an Area of Special Scientific Interest and as a Special Area of Conservation, and is protected by law.
What is more, the plans include the demolition of a 1920s colonial-style timber bungalow in order to create a natural wet woodland, as well as new infrastructure with walkways, plant facilities and drainage.
Wild wallabies on Inchconnachan Island

The island has been famously inhabited by wild red-necked wallabies since the 1940s, introduced by Countess Fiona Colquhoun. Over the years, the exotic animals have adapted to the unpredictable Scottish climate, and have even been seen hopping across the frozen loch during cold snaps.
