While the phrase “hidden gem” is notoriously overused by travel writers to describe spots that are neither secret nor particularly special, a data-driven study by HomeToGo has identified 24 truly under-the-radar UK villages boasting outstanding natural beauty. To qualify for the list, a destination could not appear among the 500 most-searched places.
Locations were evaluated based on rainfall, landscape, outdoor activity options, pubs, affordability, and a dedicated obscurity score. While regions like Cornwall, Dorset, Strangford Lough, and the Suffolk Coast & Heaths claimed top spots, the peaceful Scottish village of Arrochar earned a well-deserved place on the list.

Nestled in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park at the head of Loch Long, Ben Lomond frames Arrochar on one side and the distinctive rocky peak of The Cobbler, part of the Arrochar Alps, on the other. Its picturesque position along the lake’s shores makes it an ideal setting to unwind after a day spent exploring the outdoors. The surrounding Arrochar Alps offer a prime staycation setting for outdoor enthusiasts, with a mix of challenging summit hikes and gentler routes.
Walkers seeking a manageable one-hour trek can take the Tarbet Link Path, beginning at the Loch Long car park and following the yellow trail markers uphill. This route provides views of The Cobbler and Beinn Narnain, alongside historic remnants of a World War II torpedo testing station.

Hikers aiming to tackle The Cobbler itself face an 11-kilometre trail that typically takes between four and six hours. Starting opposite the Succoth car park, the route follows faintly marked red trail posts, presenting some tricky terrain along the way. Unless equipped for technical rock climbing, hikers should return down the same path once reaching the top.
Beyond its hiking trails, Arrochar boasts rich wildlife, offering opportunities to spot diverse bird species, grey seals, and even the occasional whale or dolphin. Visitors can also take to the water for kayaking, diving, and paddleboarding. For those looking to indulge in relaxation, the nearby Cameron House Carrick Spa by Loch Lomond provides a picturesque setting for a day of restorative treatments overlooking breathtaking scenery.
