Glasgow Airport had a short-lived possibility of being renamed, as a proposal was put forward. A Renfrewshire Council meeting last week was the place to bring the idea up, as the airport approaches its 60th anniversary.
Councillor Janis McDonald is the one leading the proposal for Glasgow Airport to be renamed after singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty, recognising the travel hub’s importance in creating new jobs, as well as helping boost the economy and tourism. The motion was also backed by Councillor Graeme Clark, while Councillor Andy Doig proposed starting a public consultation.
However, the renaming will not go ahead after all, after the proposal was rejected by operator AGS Airports. The meeting was concluded deciding that the best course of action would be to approach the airport operators directly first, before doing anything else.
Glasgow Airport has no plans for name change
Upon being asked about the name change, a Glasgow Airport spokesperson said: “We welcome the council’s motion recognising the important role Glasgow Airport has played in supporting connectivity, jobs and investment across the region during its 60th anniversary year.
“Glasgow Airport has no plans to change its name and remains focused on serving passengers and supporting economic growth across the west of Scotland.”
