Having unlimited access to clean running water here in Scotland is a true luxury, as many parts of the world do not have the same access and resources. Our wee country has been renowned across the world for its superior quality of tap water, with many claiming it is the best in the world. Plus, Glasgow in particular was named as the city with the best tap water in the UK, and we couldn’t be happier.
According to a video posted by AEX Reports, Glasgow was ranked at the top spot in the UK for the best tap water, while Norwich was named the worst. While most of these kinds of reports are based on collective opinions gathered through surveys, it is, after all, subjective. However, we couldn’t agree more (even though we’re biased).
What is more, according to another survey done by Tappwater, Scotland also came at the top of the list for the best tap water in the UK. Norwich was also named the worst in the country.
Time Out also did a study on the best tap water in the world, using Reddit posts. Scotland was named as having the best tap water in Europe, while New York City had the best tap water in the world due to receiving its water from the Catskills mountains.
Where does Glasgow’s tap water come from?
Glasgow’s water supply comes from Loch Katrine in the Trossachs National Park, a freshwater loch around 35 miles north of the city. It has been the main water source for Glasgow for around 150 years.
The location was chosen after a fatal cholera outbreak in Glasgow in the 1800s, and the loch is conveniently positioned on higher grounds.
What is more, the water is still treated by Scottish Water to ensure its safety. The process involves screening, aeration, and clarification, as well as removing sediments and disinfection to kill harmful bacteria or viruses. Finally, the pH levels are adjusted to stop the water from being too alkaline or acidic. As a result, the water tastes amazing due to its freshwater source and not having hard minerals like magnesium and calcium.
