In what is some pretty spectacular timing, just as the temperatures have begun to plummet and the heavens have finally decided to reopen, National Cinema Weekend is making a rather welcome return. The annual event is taking place this Saturday and Sunday (September 5 and 6), allowing Glaswegians and beyond to snap up a ticket to some of the biggest and best new movies for less than £5.
National Cinema Weekend
Established by the film-fanatics over at Cinema First (with support from the Film Distributors’ Association and the UK Cinema Association), National Cinema Weekend actually started out as National Cinema Day back in 2022. It was – unsurprisingly – met with a huge amount of enthusiasm, with well over 1 million people taking the opportunity to catch a wallet-friendly flick. This year, they’ve decided to make the event a double bill, giving even more cinema-lovers the chance to enjoy the big screen without having to pay the big price tag that so often comes attached to it.

530 cinemas across the UK are getting involved in the action, each of which are offering tickets to a huge variety of films for just £4. From the newest blockbusters to cult classics, there’s sure to be something for everybody to enjoy. And with luxury cinemas and IMAX screens, all taking part in the event, it really is the perfect way to spend the first weekend of the cosy season.
Phil Clapp, Chief Executive of the UK Cinema Association and Director of Cinema First, said: “Following the success of National Cinema Day, we’re excited to be extending the celebration to the entire weekend, giving cinemagoers greater flexibility to plan their visits, and the opportunity to watch the widest possible range of films, suiting all tastes.”
