Freaky Friday of 2003 is a near-perfect film. The fashion, the cast, and the amazing storyline taken from the 1972 novel of the same name. It doesn’t get better than a mother, Anna, and teenage daughter, Tess, switching bodies, ultimately walking a mile in each other’s shoes, seeing how difficult and/or fun each other’s lives are. But could a Freaky Friday sequel be on the cards?
The 2003 film brought us Jamie Lee Curtis riding on the back of a motorbike, Lindsay Lohan rocking out on stage essentially possessed by her fictional mother and of course, everyone’s favourite heartthrob Chad Michael Murray being a sexy bad boy, as per.
However, 20 years on it has now been confirmed that Freaky Friday 2 is officially happening, with Elyse Hollander taking on the screenplay with no base material, unlike the original. Sequels like this are often treated with caution because why fix what ain’t broke? But it seems that the leading ladies won’t be taking on the project lightly and will be making sure it’s worth another go.
Reportedly, it was the scream queen herself Jamie Lee Curtis who got the ball rolling, calling her contacts at Disney after the idea presented itself during her press tour for her final Halloween film, Halloween Ends, in Autumn 2022. Curtis believed there was a movie to be made, and when a legend like her says something like that, it’s pretty certain to have legs.
On the possibility of Freaky Friday having a resurgence, 90s and 2000s icon and Tess Coleman herself Lindsay Lohan reportedly agreed with her co-star. However, she prefaced that if a Freaky Friday sequel was to be made, it would have to be true to the original and be something audiences, and the cast, would absolutely adore – Lindsay’s got our backs!
The news comes as a third Mamma Mia film has also been confirmed for production, meaning we’ll be spoilt for choice come the release. Watch this space for inevitably more sequels and reboots of iconic 2000s films – we can’t wait.
