Since many were waiting for any news about festive events around the city, Glasgow Christmas Lights Switch On tradition in George Square will continue. And this year, the festivities will commence on Sunday, November 19.
The family-friendly event will mark the start of the countdown to Christmas, and the official festive period. Glaswegians wishing to attend the event could apply for the event between October 18 and 22, and can book the tickets on the Glasgow Life website.
Event times and line-up
It looks like it’s going to be a night to remember, with singers, actors and comedians taking to the stage. Doors will be open from 4:30pm and the event will last until 7pm, allowing eventgoers some time to enter the square.
The event hosts George Bowie and Cassi Gillespie from Clyde 1 will be presenting throughout, with a packed programme full of festive fun, including live music, sing-alongs, a choir, and appearances by some of the cast of Pavilion Theatre pantomime Treasure Island.
Glasgow’s Lord Provost, Jacqueline McLaren, said: “The switching on of Glasgow’s Christmas lights is always a special occasion. It’s one of the highlights of the year seeing families and friends gather to celebrate the start of the festive season in the heart of our city.”
The big moment of the Glasgow Christmas lights switch on is at 7pm to officially initiate the festive season. Of course, visitors are advised to dress appropriately for the weather, and expect road closures and limited parking.
What is more, there will be no fireworks display this year, as organisers announced on their Facebook page last week, saying: “We’ll be announcing details of the Christmas Lights Switch on ballot next week. We want to make you aware that the event is changing format in 2023, focusing on live performances and the switch-on of the fantastic Christmas lights. There will be no fireworks at this year’s event which reduces disruption to residents, is more environmentally friendly and allows for investment in other programming. Stay tuned for more details coming soon!”
So, let the Christmas countdown begin!
