After a pretty dark and dismal winter in the UK dealing with the usual lack of sunlight and lockdown restrictions, things might finally be on the up. According to the Met Office, Glasgow could see gorgeous highs of 15°C on Saturday (March 19), along with prolonged spells of sunshine.
And, if you’re like us – you’ve been counting down the days until restrictions are dropped – you’ll know this comes at a pretty decent time. The Gods must be slightly in our favour (for now). That’s because from March 21, all remaining Covid restrictions in Scotland will be lifted, apart from the requirement to wear facemasks, and for once, the weather may be on our side.
What better time to get a little preview of summer as spring is just settling in? It might not be ‘taps aff’ but it may see Scotland be the brief envy of even the most scorching Mediterranean destinations, weather-wise. That’s because, at 15°C, Glasgow is slated to be warmer than Barcelona’s 14°C on Saturday.
The First Minister outlined in her statement that the remaining domestic legal measures will be replaced with appropriate guidance. From Monday, the requirement on businesses and service providers to retain customer contact details will end, and so too will the requirement for businesses, places of worship and service providers to have regard to Scottish government guidance on Covid, and to take reasonably practicable measures set out in the guidance.
So, it’s likely the good weather will provide a lifted mood across the city, with picnics and coffees being enjoyed across the green spaces. Let’s also keep our fingers crossed that these spells continue into next week.
But, you best make the most of it, because it may not be lasting very long. Temperatures are expected to dip for a couple of days with highs of 11°C before a possible resurgence of 15°C later in the week. All we can do now is wish for another heatwave to kick in during April and May where, of course, we are blessed with Easter holidays and a bank holiday weekend.
