The UK has not had a white Christmas since 2010, so here’s to hoping for that fairy-tale-like magic that snow brings. As Glasgow is currently in its first below-zero cold snap of the season, locals have been wondering if snow on Christmas Day is possible this year. This wish could come true, as the Scottish Daily Express reported Glasgow and Edinburgh could have a higher chance of snow this Christmas.
With a yellow warning of snow and ice across parts of Scotland issued by The Met Office, Tuesday (November 28) 5pm until Wednesday (November 29) 11am and the freezing weather, the country is feeling increasingly festive. According to William Hill, Glasgow and Edinburgh have high chances of snow this Christmas of 2/1.
The weather stations are usually located at airports, so the exact locations of the chances calculated are Glasgow Airport and Edinburgh Airport.
What counts as a white Christmas?
According to The Met Office, the definition of a white Christmas is ” for one snowflake to be observed falling in the 24 hours of 25 December somewhere in the UK.” All we need is a single snowflake! However, it would be nicer to have a snow covering on the ground for that perfect Christmassy feel.
How likely is a white Christmas in 2023?
So with Glasgow Airport and Edinburgh Airport having a chance of 2/1 of snow falling on Christmas Day, it makes us the most likely city to see a white Christmas this year.
Leeds-Bradford Airport comes at a chance of 3/1, while Belfast, Manchester, Aberdeen and London all follow, yet London’s odds are not as high at 11/1.
