As Glasgow is experiencing turbulent weather this weekend with Storm Austen and Storm Boelo, plenty of travel disruptions are expected. As Glasgow Airport warned of possible flight delays, others joined in, with plenty of other closures and interruptions to services to be aware of.
Glasgow Airport
Glasgow Airport has advised passengers to check ahead of travelling, as strong winds are likely to affect flights. They posted on X, saying: “Strong winds associated with Storm Boelo are forecast to affect parts of Scotland this weekend and may cause disruption to some flights.
“Passengers are advised to check the status of their flight with their airline before travelling and allow extra time for their journey.”
The safety of passengers, staff and airline partners remains our priority. Airport teams will continue to monitor conditions closely, as periods of strong winds can require restrictions to airside activities to ensure the safety of staff working on the airfield and passengers.”
ScotRail
ScotRail has introduced speed restrictions on multiple routes, advising of travel disruptions from Glasgow, due to heavy rain and high winds during Storm Austen and Storm Boelo. Routes include Glasgow Central to Carlisle via Kilmarnock, with some services facing cancellations, making additional stops or taking longer than usual.
As always, check before travelling and travel only when necessary.
Flooding at M74 Motherwell
There has been flooding on the M74 at Motherwell, with lane one of the southbound on-slip at Junction 6 currently restricted.
National Rail line closures
A number of train line closures are expected ahead of Storm Boelo, resulting in the closing of the south and west of Kilwinning lines from 9pm on Saturday, with the Oban and Mallaig lines closing from around 10pm, and more closures and speed restrictions will inevitably follow on Sunday. As a result, significant travel disruption is predicted for the entire country.
Trains between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh via Shotts have been suspended
Trains between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh via Shotts have been suspended due to flooding. There is water on the tracks in Shotts, and the service can only come back on once the water has gone down.
