The terrace is also quite the suntrap.

Beer gardens and outdoor terraces are now the new destination du jour and it seems more outdoor spaces are popping up in the city suitable for all our post-lockdown soirĂ©es. One space that has appeared hot on our radar as further restrictions are about to be lifted is Mackintosh at the Willow’s rooftop terrace, a welcoming hideout nestled within the historic building on Sauchiehall Street.

Mackintosh at the Willow re-opened to the public in September 2018 after an extensive restoration, and post-lockdown it will be opening its doors once again. The lifting of further restrictions will see the original Willow Tea Rooms, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1903, reopen alongside the building’s gorgeous rooftop terrace.

Found atop of the historic institution designed by the well-known Glasgow architect, this rooftop area is sometimes overlooked when it comes to hunting down places in the city to soak up the sun. However, this particular terrace happens to be one of only two south-facing roof terraces in the whole of Glasgow and is the perfect escapism despite being located on one of the city’s busiest streets.

The terrace has been carefully designed to show off both its exposed original brickwork and views of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed chimney- which is considered an architectural treasure. Complete with ample seating, floral decorations and lighting plus a pop-up bar this delightful and unique space is great for all occasions whether you fancy a catch-up, a break from shopping or celebrating an event.

Mackintosh at the Willow even has heaters, because unfortunately not every day is sunny in Glasgow, but we’re not going to let the weather rain on our parade when it comes to meeting up with mates. As well as soaking up some rays at this rooftop terrace, you can enjoy nibbles, sharing boards, salads and sandwiches.

Plus, sun worshipping is thirsty work and luckily the rooftop terrace at Mackintosh at the Willow serves up both unique and classic cocktails for you to sip on. You’ll also find a wide selection of beers, wines, fizz, spirits and soft drinks whatever your tipple of choice may be.

The rooftop terrace is open from 12-5 (last bookings) on Fridays to Sundays and on bank holidays. During the summer months, Mackintosh at the Willow will be open seven days a week. Guests are allowed to stay up on the rooftop for a maximum of two hours and booking is strongly advised. You can book your spot here.
