To make an outing that little bit more exciting, checking out what Glasgow has to offer when it comes to the abundance of speakeasy bars could be the way to go. Locals and visitors alike can experience a glimpse of the “prohibition era” by stepping into these bars hidden in plain sight.
1. El Santito
Located at the back of the Mexican spot El Santo, El Santito boasts a clandestine atmosphere, flashy decor, DJs and plenty of cocktails to go around. It does get busy, so guests are advised to book in advance on the El Santo website.
84 Miller St, G1 1DT
2. Hide & Seek
Did someone say heated Treehouse? While located directly off Buchanan Street, Hide & Seek is not the most obvious find for many nestled in one of Merchant City’s alleyways. There is no need to book, as the bar accepts walk-ins, and is always free to enter while open until 3am. Guests can find multiple rooms within the bar, with a charming heated Treehouse terrace at the back. Expect themed events, DJs and plenty of cocktail options.
84 Buchanan St, G1 3HA
3. Absent Ear
It honestly just wouldn’t be a speakeasy bars in Glasgow list without Absent Ear located within The Amsterdam. With its intriguing name, Vincent Van Gogh-inspired theme and creative cocktails, the bar has won multiple awards since opening, and is continuing to slay the Glasgow bar scene. It’s best to book in advance as the bar is reservation-only, and let your creativity flow at Absent Bar!
106-108 Brunswick St, G1 1TF
4. The Flying Duck
This is a true speakeasy, with the front door of The Flying Duck often locked, and the cool kids having to use the (unmarked) back door to get in. Expect indie and electro DJs, club nights and a friendly vibe.
142 Renfield St, G2 3AU
5. The Berkeley Suite
Hidden behind a pawn shop on the side of a motorway, The Berkeley Suite is the place to be for club nights and fun weekend vibes. The nightclub constantly hosts decent DJs in its vintage-style ballroom late-night venue, and you can find out what’s on its website.
237 North St, G3 7DL
6. Mackintosh at the Willow
We adore beer gardens and outdoor terraces on a sunny day, and Mackintosh At The Willow terrace happens to be one of only two south-facing roof terraces in the whole of Glasgow. The terrace has also been thoughtfully decorated to expose the original brickwork and design of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh-designed chimney, as it is deemed an architectural treasure.
