Known for its quirky menu, Nonna Said in Candleriggs combines Italian classics with innovative street food, delighting guests with 90s hip-hop, cartoons and air hockey every day. Plus, the spot boasts a creative cocktail menu, as well as a generous beer selection.
What is more, the venue often gets hailed as the “best pizza” in Glasgow, and even has a sign up saying: “Nonna Said… F**k Domino’s”. So, Secret Glasgow got the chance to visit Nonna Said to find out what the fuss is all about.
As you walk through the door, you’re met with a colourful, non-pretentious décor and the familiar sounds of 90s hip-hop playing in the background. An episode of The Simpsons is playing on a giant projector screen and the inviting smell of pizza is in the air. On first impression, Nonna Said seems to be a millennial’s paradise.
Nonna’s creative approach to street food is one of its many alluring points, and with absolute gems like Carbonara Fritta and Lasagne Fritta with garlic mayo, the starters are as good as they sound. What is more, we added some NFP (Nonna’s Fried Pickles) which are buttermilk fried pickle slices with
Chiu chow chilli mayo.
Guests can also try the newest additions to the menu, such as Fajitas with options like Bavette steak, as well as Hot Dogs & Fries with toppings like Salt & Chilli and The Classic. The Nonna’s Loaded option is also a winner, which comes with a choice of loaded fries, nachos, hash browns or smiley faces with a topping of one’s choice, such as the Currywurst with Frankfurter and Currywurst sauce.
And now, for the verdict that matters the most: are the pizzas as good as advertised? We HAD to try the Lasagne pizza with the new Bagel base, and it is literally our two favourite foods combined into one. The first couple of bites are so confusing to the brain, however, as my mind couldn’t comprehend how it tastes like lasagne, but it also tastes like pizza? Overall, it’s worth a try.
The Philly Cheesesteak pizza and the Jamaican Me Crazy were also winners. The Philly Cheesesteak pizza was as divine as it sounds, topped with liquid cheese sauce, slow-cooked beef, caramelised onions and green peppers. Nonna Said is officially one of the best pizza places in Glasgow, offering creative pizzas that will make you want to dance (yes, I did a dance).
Nonna’s cocktail menu is also noteworthy, with plenty of funky options to go for from classics such as Pornstar Martinis and Mai Tais to more creative takes like the Banana Colada and Yer Da Sells Avon, it’s quite hard to choose just one. So, when you’re there, might as well try quite a few.
Nonna Said is a laid-back space filled with good vibes, accompanied by great food and friendly service. Whether it’s a Friday night or a mid-week catch-up with pals, it’s an easy go-to spot for pizza and street food lovers.
