Now, it’s official: the Scottish accent is the most charming in the English-speaking world. When it comes to attractive, charming, or even annoying accents, we’re not sure what the rules are for someone to be charmed or offended by the way someone sounds. However, Highland Titles did a survey asking what Americans thought of different accents around the world.
Highland Titles surveyed 1,000 Americans, uncovering the answers to questions we never knew we asked.
From Irish and Welsh to Australian and French, no accent was left off-limits to voters. The survey explored which accents are the most assertive, romantic, beautiful (not sure how that’s different to charming, but sure), boring and more.
Scottish accent took the top spot for the most charming accent in the world, followed by Australian and Irish. It was also named the second most beautiful accent (again, still not sure what the difference is), as well as the second most attractive accent in the world.
Scottish was also the second most calming and the second most funny accent. Hey, what’s so funny about that!
Australian accent was deemed the most attractive accent in the world, with the London accent taking the third spot. Irish came fourth, French came fifth and Italian was sixth, while Welsh and Brummie were named seventh and eighth.
The least attractive accent in the world is officially the New York accent, with Boston and American Midwestern coming closely behind. Surprisingly to us, the Yorkshire accent was named the eighth least attractive accent, we never thought it sounded that bad!
37% of the surveyed also thought Arnold Schwarzenegger has the hardest accent to understand, followed by Colombian actress Sofia Vergara (27%). The most enjoyable accent was deemed to be of Sean Connery, closely followed by Liam Neeson.
So, here we have it, folks, a global accent battle on what Americans think about us.
