Our beloved not-so-wee Scottish gritters are back in action during the Arctic Blast these days, and we are officially obsessed with their hysterically amusing names. Taylor Drift, Spready Mercury and Snowrassic Park are all doing honourable work by keeping our roads snow and ice-free, but there are plenty more worth mentioning.
What is more, most gritters have been named by the public and first started at Scottish schools. The naming competition then opened online in 2020, with the wider public getting a chance to name the essential snow machines. The gritters with the punny names span over around 400 miles of Scotland’s South West, including Glasgow.

How can you name a gritter?
Last year and the years before, there was a competition to name a few gritters. Thousands of names were suggested by Scots, and they’re just too good! The names have to be family-friendly, short and not copyrighted, such as a brand name. The name also has to be no longer than four words and 25 charecters.
Today (November 21), Amey North East launched a new competition for the public to help name its new gritters. To enter the competition, you have to complete this online form.
The winning names will be announced on the @NETrunkRoads Facebook and X channels after the competition ends on December 20.
