The Sunday Times annual list of the ‘Best Places To Live In The UK‘ is here, where every little corner of the UK gets examined. While we love all of Glasgow and would never discriminate, Shawlands has officially been named the best place to live within the UK’s friendliest city for the second year in a row.
Why Shawlands?
Finnieston used to be the one to rake in the positive reviews and praises when it came to the best places and up-and-coming neighbourhoods. However, the time has now come for Shawlands, as it’s been continuously deemed the best. Plus, the neighbourhood was also named one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world in October 2022.
Kilmanrock Road was the most praised, where one can find “more coffee shops than you can shake an AeroPress at”, as well as plenty of local businesses such as restaurants, florists and even the Scottish Ballet at the Tramway industrial theatre venue up the road on Pollokshaws Road.
What is more, plenty of businesses are expanding to Glasgow’s Southside nowadays, such as the Tik Tok sensation Chef Jimmy Lee with his new Salt & Chilli. Not to mention the green spaces of the Southside, Pollok Country Park and Queens Park.
The average house price in Shawlands is also not too bad at all, compared to the national average, coming at £203,700.
Joy Parkinson, an arts PR, said: “Shawlands has a real buzz about it. It’s inspiring to be neighbours with artists, musicians and others embedded in the community.”
How is the list created?
Now, one might wonder: how does one determine the best places to live? According to The Sunday Times, they have looked into the latest inspection reports from schools, the quality of transport links as well as cycling routes, wi-fi speeds and local house prices.
Also mentioned within the reports were the community spirit, attractive surroundings such as green spaces and a decent high street.
So, we couldn’t be happier to see a Glasgow up-and-coming neighbourhood ranking as the best place to live once more, and it is clear that the future shines bright for Shawlands.
