Oh we do like to be beside the seaside but Glasgow is sadly not the closest city to the coast. However, set to bring a taste of the sea to Glasgow is brand new seafood restaurant, Shucks.
From the team behind Michelin-starred Cail Bruich, Epicures and Brett, Shucks describes itself as “a relaxed seafood restaurant serving up the very best fresh produce from Scottish waters, alongside an elegant wine and champagne bar in the heart of Hyndland in Glasgow’s west end”.
Head chef at Shucks, Shaun Haggarty, has developed seasonal, produce-focused menus inspired by the Scottish coastline. The menu can change daily depending on what the restaurant’s fishermen have caught, but Shucks promises “the finest sustainable seafood cooked classically and over fire; in-house curing and smoking; with seasonal specials, sharing plates and bar snacks”.
Menu highlights include Shucks champagne clams with garlic, chilli, coriander and charred sourdough; BBQ Halibut with trotter glaze; small plates like Hamachi crudo, as well as bar snacks like crispy fried whitebait and tater tots with chive crème fraiche, herring caviar and Sardinian pecorino. The restaurant also plans to offer a Sunday menu, plus as feasting menu filled with decadent whole cuts of fish, plentiful Scottish shellfish plus their own house-cured and smoked selection that’s perfect for sharing. Plus, those who love a classic fish and chips can tuck into a fish supper of either cod or halibut with fat chips, tartare sauce and lemon.
As well as serving up wonderful Scottish seafood dishes to the people of Glasgow, Shucks will also have a stylish bar and outdoor terrace which will be available for walk-ins only, making for the perfect setting for drinks during the day and night. Guests can enjoy fine wines, local artisan beers and in-house cocktails alongside house-cured and smoked seasonal fare and the finest of Scottish oysters and seafood snacks.
Set to open on March 30 at the former site of Nick’s Neighbourhood Bar on Hyndland Road, Shucks will consist of an 80-cover restaurant, bar and outdoor terrace with plenty of decorative touches that give a nod to the coast. The interior features gold patterned wall emulating fish scales, nautical blue furniture and a seascape wall mural by local Glasgow artist, Rebecca Hamilton.
