While Scotland is as beautiful as it gets, a change of scenery is necessary every once in a while to be able to truly appreciate what we have, just like that feeling of sleeping in your own bed after a long holiday is priceless. However, one does not always have to go far from Glasgow to feel like being abroad. When it comes to places that don’t feel like Scotland, The Japanese Garden at Cowden offers a quaint oasis that feels like a million miles away.
The Japanese Garden at Cowden is also named “Sha Raku En”, meaning “a place of pleasure and delight”, and is located just 50 minutes from Glasgow. Founded by Ella Christie, the spot aims to merge the two cultures together, bringing a welcome union of Japanese and Scottish flairs.
The large garden boasts a variety of exotic plant species, wildlife and cute Japanese motives like a summer house, ponds, little bridges and a dry garden. Guests can savour quiet strolls, watch wildlife and learn more about the flora within the premises. What is more, there are more walks available outside of the garden within the area.
The Japanese Garden at Cowden offers three traditional Japanese garden forms, which are a pond and island, a stroll, and the Azumaya and Summer House. What is more, the spot is home to the Tea Cowden Tearoom, inviting guests for a wee cuppa, cake or Afternoon Tea with both indoor and outdoor seating.
While the cafe itself is walk-ins only, visitors need to book in advance for the Afternoon Tea experience. For £19.95, guests will receive a selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes along with one hot drink per person, as well as entry to the garden. Those wanting to book the Afternoon Tea experience can do so on The Japanese Garden at Cowden website.
Entry tickets to the garden itself are £8.50, and it is advised to book in advance to avoid any disappointment.
