Well, climbing into a horse’s mouth isn’t something I’ve ever dreamed of doing, but those after a wee bit of an adventure can climb The Kelpies – the largest equine sculptures in the world – located right here in Scotland.
The Kelpies are located in Falkirk, around 40 minutes from Glasgow, right by the M9 motorway, boasting two massive steel horses designed by sculptor Andy Scott. Kelpies are mythical creatures in Scottish folklore that live in lochs, with the ability to shape-shift. They often present themselves as a white or grey horse, but some accounts tell the tale of the beings taking up human form. What is more, the Kelpies sculptures also pay homage to all the hard-working horses that helped tow the heavy machinery in agriculture and towing on the canals.
The Kelpies Experience

The Kelpies Experience provides guests with a unique opportunity to climb one of the steel horses, all the way to the top, where its open mouth is.
Each aerial climb tour lasts 90 minutes, giving adventurers plenty of time to explore the 30-metre tall structure, with the experience going as high as 25 metres. To be able to partake in the climb, visitors need to be 140 centimetres or taller, as well as required to sign a disclaimer beforehand.
What is more, helmets and harnesses are provided, with the climbing experience leading all the way to the top. The guides will also tell the story of the sculptures, as well as the history of Scotland’s canals.
However, The Kelpie Experience cannot welcome walk-ins, so those wanting to climb to the horse’s mouth will need to book in advance, with both daytime and illuminatednighttime sessions available.
The Kelpies Experience is located at 269W+F7 The Helix, Grangemouth, Falkirk FK2 7ZT, and you can book your spot on their website.
