Crisp sandwich. Crisp butty. Piece and crisps. Whatever you call it, nothing beats sticking a bag of Walkers between two slices of bread and calling it lunch. It’s the ultimate British indulgence. And so it appears the iconic crisp company has finally cottoned on to the fact. A ‘Walkers Sandwich Shop’ will open in Glasgow this June.
Teaming up with a popular Glasgow sandwich shop, you’ll be able to buy the ultimate crisp sandwiches for one week only. Several Walkers Sandwich Shops will launch across the UK on June 12, featuring some crazy crisp butty creations. Don’t expect it to be sticking to classic flavours like Salt & Vinegar, Ready Salted or Prawn Cocktail either. Sandwich makers will have their hands on an array of Walkers’ crisps like Quavers, Wotsits, and Monster Munch.
We don’t know yet where the Walkers Sandwich Shop is, but it will be somewhere in the city centre for one week only. (We’re sure you can make some educated guesses.) What we do know is that each shop will tailor its sandwiches to the region: a Monster Munchy box crossover creates itself, surely.
The launch follows two years of debate about whether crisps should be eaten inside the sandwich, or on the side. Research shows that 98% of UK adults believe that crisps make sandwiches better, but just over a third (34%) prefer them on the side, versus 27% who eat crisps inside their sandwich. With Walkers is encouraging people to visit the sandwich shops to re-assess this hotly contested topic.
“We believe that a bag of Walkers makes your lunchtime sandwich even more enjoyable, but it’s very clear to us that people feel very strongly about whether or not the crisps should be eaten in their sandwich or on the side,” said Philippa Pennington at Walkers.
“With Walkers Sandwich Shops located across the UK, we’re calling on people to head to their nearest shop, taste the sandwiches and have their say online by sharing their favourite combination from the menu, or favourite crisps to enjoy in a sandwich – whether that’s Wotsits, Monster Munch, Quavers, or classic Walkers!”
So far, along with Glasgow, the only participating sandwich shops announced are in Liverpool, Brighton and the London-based Max’s Sandwich Shop. The full menu and list of shop locations won’t be revealed until the week before opening. But highlights include Max Halley’s ‘Mighty Monster Muncher’: a Monster Munch-filled fish finger sandwich, with cabbage, chipotle mayonnaise and Pico De Gallo on home-baked Focaccia.
If you want to have a go at making your own, Max Halley has also teamed up with Walkers to create some crisp butty online recipes to crisp up your lunch. Start making your own here.
