Tango is an unspoken language characterised by intricate footwork and emotional music that provides the rhythmic backdrop for the dance. Since its inception in the late 19th century it has evolved into various styles, becoming part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. This season, the rich art form is crossing the Atlantic and coming to Glasgow thanks to “We Call It Tango”.
The show takes you on a musical journey through popular songs by the likes of Gardel, Astor Piazzolla and Ángel Villoldo. Mark you calendars for 13 October if you want to experience a taste of Argentina and Uruguay without leaving the city. Places are limited so secure your spot now.
What is “We Call It Tango”?
Set in 1950s’ Buenos Aires, “We Call It Tango” follows the life of Amelia, “la abuela”, whose lifelong dream is to dance the milonga. It is an emotional love story, beautifully told in three acts and thirteen tangos, that features moving music and intricate dance moves, created and choreographed by Agustina Videla and Pablo Destito, straight from Buenos Aires.
Tango, its music and the show
Tango was born approximately 150 years ago along the Rio de la Plata Valley, in the impoverished areas of Uruguay and Argentina. Combining Argentine Milonga, Spanish-Cuban Habanera, and Uruguayan Candombe, this captivating art form conveys emotional intensity and romance, nowadays connecting with people from all over the world.
At the show, dancers will first lock eyes and then engage in an intimate embrace (abrazo), feeling each other’s movements, breath, and heartbeat. As the stirring melodies of the piano and bandoneon are heard, “We Call It Tango” takes you on an emotional journey to South America.
