Katsu believe it!
Food and drink businesses have been hit hard in the past year so it’s great to see new restaurants and bars finally opening up across Glasgow. Plus, this latest eatery involves katsu curry- say no more.
The people of Glasgow can now make their day brighter with a comforting bowl of the well-known Japanese dish. KATSU Japanese Curry Shop will be specialising in serving this perfectly breaded and covered in golden sauce goodness. The dish may not be the most photogenic but what it may sometimes lack in appearance, it certainly makes up for with plenty of flavour!
According to KATSU: “The new restaurant at 53 West Nile Street will offer an upbeat atmosphere with a Japanese ‘Izikaya’ style of service so don’t expect any fine-dining frills or white tablecloths at this easy-going eatery. The laid back concept aims to fuse high quality Japanese street food at lunch and dinner while enjoying a beer and a chat with friends over some deliciously salted fried food.
The 22-seater restaurant offers a mix of high and low seating, as well as cosy couple booths to watch all the action of the venue from the sides. Inside the space, you’ll also find bright interiors and graffiti murals, inspired by Japanese urban chic streets.
The restaurant has been luring Glaswegians in on social media, promising a new restaurant coming soon to the city centre and now finally, we can taste these dishes for ourselves. Expect an array of dishes covered in the delicious curry sauce and Japanese condiments like kimchi, wasabi and pickled ginger.
Plus, their previous little teaser videos featured a range of katsu! Choose from breaded chicken, beef, Wagyu, pork, duck, salmon, squid and tuna with all the katsu flavours- what’s not to love, right? As well as various katsu curry options (all served with miso soup and either rice or udon noodles), the menu also features the likes of gyoza, chicken karaage, the iconic katsu sando sandwich and katsu currywurst.
The craze for this dish lit up a few years ago, since then many of us have headed to our local Wagamama, ordered the katsu curry and not looked back. That combination of fried cutlet (chicken, pork or some brilliantly inventive veggie alternatives such as aubergine or sweet potato) and spicy, creamy and fragrant sauce is pretty irresistible, but it isn’t as easy to master as it looks.
On KATSU’s menu, you won’t be short of the signature dish. The restaurant offers six vegetarian katsu options including sweet potato, tofu, avocado, okra, lotus root and mushroom, as well as a range of fish and seafood such as tuna, seabass, oyster and crab claw coated in crispy panko alongside that delicious umami sauce.
As well as the famous Japanese curry dish, you’ll find crispy tempura dishes, fried rice served with miso soup, savoury salads and sensational sides. Plus, the restaurant on West Nile Street offers lunchtime specials like salt and pepper chips with curry sauce, cheese katsu chips with curry sauce and roast duck fried rice.
