As the new King Charles banknotes entered circulation on Wednesday, June 5, it will take some time to phase out the Queen’s face off of our cash. However, not everywhere in Glasgow is currently taking the fresh notes.
SPT has confirmed they will not be accepting £5, £10, £15, £20 and £50 banknotes with King Charles on the automatic machines at Glasgow Subway stations. Customers will still be able to pay with their sparkly new banknotes in the ticket desk.
A statement shared by Glasgow Subway said: “Please be aware, our ticket vending machines are unable to accept new King Charles bank notes. If you wish to use them as payment, please use them at the ticket office.”
It has not yet been confirmed how long it will take to start accepting the new money, so watch this space for any further updates.
A statement said: “New King Charles III banknotes will only be printed to replace those that are worn and to meet any overall increase in demand for banknotes. Our approach is in line with guidance from the Royal Household, to minimise the environmental and financial impact of this change.”
