Those who had outdoorsy plans this weekend might need to reconsider, as Storm Kathleen is set to batter Glasgow and most of South of Scotland. The Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning for Wind for this Saturday (April 6), as locals and visitors alike are encouraged to plan ahead of the storm.
The Western parts of the UK are going to be most affected, as Storm Kathleen is forecast to bring wind gusts of up to 70mph. Those on the coast are set for large waves, with possible ferry cancellations. Glasgow is looking at wind gusts of up to 52mph, with possible travel disruptions.
Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: “Winds pick up further through Friday evening, overnight into Saturday, whereas we start Saturday morning we’ll see widely across the country gusts of 30-40mph.”
“In western parts of the UK, inland, we could see gusts of 40 to 50mph and then around the western coast of the UK we could see gusts of sort of 60-70mph.”
While normally we would expect heavy rain with storms, no rain has been forecast for Glasgow on Saturday, April 6 as of now, with possible sunny (yet windy) spells and spring-like temperatures of up to 15 degrees.
The Met Office forecast for tomorrow (April 6) says: “Overnight rain quickly clearing, then drier, brighter with sunny spells and some showers. Windy and much milder with strong to gale force southerly winds, severe gales over south Argyll. Maximum temperature 15 °C.”
What is more, Storm Kathleen is the fourth named storm of 2024, with Storm Jocelyn in January causing significant travel disruption to ScotRail. However, the storm’s name starts with the letter K, meaning it is the 11th storm of the season which commenced in September. The only other time the UK had a K letter storm was Storm Katie in March, 2016, meaning we did have it bad this season. To be honest, I am just happy it’s not Storm Kristina… Stay safe, folks!
