One thing is clear – choosing where to eat in Glasgow is no easy feat, boasting plenty of decent restaurants from every cuisine imaginable. However, indulging in a delightful tasting menu can elevate any dining experience, and Studio Modou West offers just that.
Studio Modou West is located on Argyle Street in Finnieston, and owned by Chef Modou Diagne, who is also behind the beloved Glasgow staple, 111 by Modou. At Studio Modou West, guests can explore a more experimental menu that steers away from what we all know and love at 111 by Modou, allowing the staff to get creative with the dishes. What is more, there is a Studio Modou South, located on Nithsdale Street.
Focusing on fresh ideas and creativity, the food at Studio Modou reflects its spirit. On Fridays and Saturdays, visitors can indulge in a five-course tasting menu for £30 per person, and the menu changes to make room for experimentation.
Secret Glasgow got the chance to try the San Sebastian five-course tasting menu, and it was actually banging. The first course started off with a bag with a Goat’s Cheese Arancini, accompanied by a caramelised onion ketchup and comte cheese. While I am not normally a goat’s cheese fan, this combination was delightful.
The Smoked Potato Terrine was second on the agenda, coming together with a white anchovy emulsion, pea pesto and beurre blanc. The star of the show was definitely the Salted Cod with brandade, chorizo, fannel and, haricot beans and paprika. The delicate dance of flavours melted together like a symphony of flavours, leaving us wanting for more.
The fourth course on the tasting menu was the Aged Pork Belly with saurekraut, celeriac, fermented black garlic and quince gel jus, thus concluding the savoury dishes of the meal.
The dessert brought me back to my childhood, as the chefs made the exact cherry jam my grandma makes – the Basque Cheesecake came accompanied by a sour cherry foam topped with candied walnuts, and I think I could eat that for the rest of my life. More, please!
Overall, Studio Modou West is a small jewel of the West End that shouldn’t be missed, and, most importantly, it is friendly to our wallets, too!
