The news regarding the failed Willy Wonka Experience in Glasgow took over the internet in February this year, after crying children and angry parents were pictured at an empty warehouse and the police were called to the scene. However, local and international creators have been getting inspired by the “event”, with the experience being recreated in Holywood, as well as getting its own horror movie. And now, a Willy Wonka Experience Glasgow musical parody, ‘Willy’s Candy Spectacular: A Musical Parody’, is in the works, playing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year.
The musical is created by US producer Richard Kraft, which will see its debut performance at the Pleasance King Dome at one of the biggest art festivals in the world, and will run from August 9 to August 26.
Speaking on the Willy Wonka Glasgow musical parody, Richard Kraft said: “The process of creating a brand-new musical, which usually spans years, is being condensed into just a couple of months. The first three tracks from the show have been released, including actor John Stamos performing the opening number Willy’s Candy Spectacular.
The song has been billed as a “post-apocalyptic opening number that traces the downfall of civilisation back to the disastrous event in Glasgow.”
Songwriters Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner said: “We love musicals with epic opening numbers. And we thought — what could be more epic than John Stamos singing about the end of humanity and linking our species’ demise to an underwhelming immersive experience in Scotland?”
What is more, the organisers have also emphasised the musical is a parody, and that they have no affiliation with the original event organiser Billy Coull or The House of Illuminati. What is more, the story will not include the storyline behind Roald Dahl’s book Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.
