You’ve been talking on the app, and have finally exchanged numbers: and now, it’s finally time to meet irl. While finding the right romantic match is not the easiest of tasks even on a good day, it doesn’t have to seem like Groundhog Day just because we want to find someone compatible. Instead, it can become a fun adventure while meeting new people and creating memorable experiences. So, we’ve put together a list of first date ideas in Glasgow that will boost serotonin levels and won’t feel as repetitive. And not to mention, it’s just in time for Valentine’s Day!
1. Giggle at a stand-up comedy show
The Stand Comedy Club hosts Red Raw every Tuesday, which is basically an open-mic night where ten separate stand-up acts perform short sets. It’s sometimes the first time on stage for some of them, but also the more seasoned performers use the audience as guinea pigs to try out their new material.
The show is considered the best open-mic night in the UK, so you will have a braw time no matter what: even if some performers are a wee bit too nervous that night. The entry is only £5, so it’s a great wee event if you’re looking to treat your date and not break the bank (cost of living and all that). Plus, you can just come early to have a drink and a chat beforehand as there’s a bar.
2. Go to a time capsule bar and play arcade games
The first thing that came to mind after going to NQ64 Glasgow was that this is such a great place for a date. Visitors can play Mario Kart, Guitar Hero or the dancing game I forgot the name of, while trying out all the flashy cocktails from the menu. Moreover, the venue is covered in neon décor and plays some proper throwback tunes. There is no need to book, so just show up and have a blast by letting that inner child free accompanied by some friendly competitiveness.
3. Check out an adults-only fairground
The suggestively named Fayre Play is an adults-only venue in our fair city. The spot is a carnival for adults to enjoy childish fun with creative cocktails. Scotland’s first adults-only games experience offers some classic competitive favourites with a Glasgweigian twist such as Bulls AYE, Slam Drunk and Lucky Tosser. After you’re done with clubbing, you can adjourn for cocktails and street food at the wee bar. Guests can opt for delights such as The Fire Eater burger with buttermilk fried panko chicken breast, house katsu mayo, homemade pickle slaw, gem lettuce and jalapeños, served in a toasted brioche bun. And for those who are after some liquid courage, go for the Who Gives A Duck with Bacardi, Raspberry Sourz, Blue Curacao, fresh lemon, lemonade, apple juice and malic acid.
4. Tackle an escape room
While tackling an escape room can bring out some debatable traits in all of us, it can also be great fun if you’re dealing with an individual who doesn’t take themselves too seriously. You probably can’t be certain which side you’re gonna get from a stranger in that particular instance, however, going to an escape room is one of the more uncommon first date ideas. If you’re not afraid of being locked in a room with someone for an hour, you can show off your sense of adventure at Alcatraz, Escape Reality.
5. Visit an art gallery
It is no secret that Glasgow is abundant in museums and art galleries. The elegant vibes that and art gallery offers makes for an easy-going first date idea without having to do crazy activities or compete at games. You can admire art, talk about ideas, look at art you can’t afford, and meander through the energy-filled rooms, followed by a coffee break. Check out the exhibitions at the newly-refurbished The Burrell Collection, where you don’t need to book in advance. Plus, it’s located within Pollok Country Park, so it’s the perfect combination of culture and nature.
6. See a captivating tango show
Tango originated in the salons, bars and brothels of the main cities in the Rio de la Plata valley. Yet, the artform has changed a lot since its humble (and sometimes somber) beginnings, combining influences from a range of other genres. At We Call It Tango, guests can immerse themselves in the world of the Argentine tango and beyond, a unique show that encompasses music from the Golden Age (1935-1955) until today. Sit back and unwind to iconic melodies and intricate choreography.
7. Check out one of the best tea houses in town
Tchai Ovna is not just a regular tea house: it’s a place to connect, make new friends and attend various events as well as discovering innovative tea blends and veggie dishes. While there are no upcoming events in the tea house as of now, connecting over some seriously good tea is a first date with no pressure that won’t break the bank.
8. Catch a mesmerising tribute by candlelight
Sometimes you might choose to go the romantic and not-so-light-hearted route and set the stage with an intimate Candlelight concert. This unique approach might just about wow your date thanks to the soft candlelight lent by thousands of twinkling candles and you might even earn some extra Cupid points. Then, there’s the incredible music you’ll hear at some of Glasgow’s most gorgeous venues, recreated by talented musicians, all in all making for a perfect first date.
